Selection is a one of mainly function used in photoshop.
most often we seleck some area to copy them and paste on a new layer - to make them changes, add shadow, chnge colour, etc. We can also change a selected area on a one layer - changes will effect only on a selected area.
Making photo-montage or retouching photos it is a basic function, without master skills you won't be able to achieve your goal.

For selecting we use tools that are placed in top side tools panel.
They are:

• Group 1 (selection with shapes) - page1/4 (this page)
• Group 2 (lasso) - page/4
• Group 3 (wand) - page3/4
• Very good method (quick mask) - page4

Group 1

Rectangular Marquee Tool

It is used for selecting rectangle areas of picture.
How to use this tool:
We put cursor ona place where corner of selection should be, press LMB and with unreleased LMB we move cursor in a place where should be other corner of selection. Release LMB. Area is selected - we can see broken line surrounding selected area.

Rectangular Marquee Toolhas got 3 different selecting method. we can choose those methods from the rolled menu. (menu tools)
First is:

Normal.

we select rectangular area. The size of selection is from the place where we press and release LMB. In thoose places lies przeciwlegle corners of selection.

Fixed Aspect Ratio.

We select rectangular area with fixed aspect ratio - Aspect is constance and always equal what we write in fields Width i Height. For example: Width 1, Height 1 - selected area will be a square. (square shape of selection we can also recive by holding SHIFT button during selection), Width 4, Height 3 - selected area will have proportions the same like digital photo, Width 16, Height 9 - selected area with panoramic movie dimensions etc.

Fixed Size.

we select rectangular area, with fixed width (in pixels) Width and height we write in fields D Width i Height.
In this case there is no need to use mouse - after LMB clicked program will automaticlly select area with given parameters.

In submenu (Tool menu - Rectangular Marquee Tool) there is also field Feather. It is used for making border of selection soften. The high values gives us borders of selection soften.
On the left side there are four small icons (very usefoul) I will tell abouth them more douring tutorial about tool Lasso Tool.

In panel with tools - after RMB we get acces to other tools with similar use. There are:

Eliptical Marquee Tool - is used for selecting eliptical shapes. Selecting area with pressed SHIFT button - we get ideal circle.
Single Row Marquee Tool i Single Column Marquee Tool - used for selecting thiny lines. () (odpowiednio - w poziomie i w pionie) o grubości 1px - wpisując większą wartość uzyskujemy efekt rozmycia. Żadko używane.
